Richard Whiteley became an apprentice in a stained-glass studio at the age of sixteen; he holds an undergraduate degree form The School of Art & Design, Australian National University (Glass) and a Masters degree (MFA, Sculpture) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Until recently, he was Associate Professor and Head of the Glass Workshop at the School of Art & Design at The Australian National University. In October 2019, he relocated to the United States and has taken a position as Senior Program Manager for The Studio, at the Corning Museum of Glass. Whiteley says of his working method: “My works explore space and I use glass as a substrate to structure and layer voided forms so they can be read as illuminated positives. The material qualities of glass – transparency and translucency – are elements within the work that create the dialogue between voids and solids”.
