NCAGG November Meeting - Ted Sawyer
Engineering Fused Glass for Success in the Built Environment
How can fused glass be used in windows and architectural environments? How do you ensure its initial success and long-term viability? And what do you do about the fact that statistically speaking, things break, whether due to weather, vandalism, or what have you?
Ted Sawyer received his BA in art with a focus in ceramics from Lewis and Clark College. From 1992-1993 he was the artist in residence at the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, Oregon. In 1997 he joined Bullseye Glass Company, where he is currently the Director of Research & Education and the Creative Director of Bullseye Studio. Sawyer teaches and lectures both internationally and online, directs the production of Bullseye’s online educational videos, and works with artists and clients to bring their visions in glass to life, at scale. His glass work—featured in Corning’s New Glass Review 28, 30, 31, and 35—has been exhibited at galleries and museums around the world. See his work at tedsawyer.com. Big Build 2024
Volunteer opportunities for "NCAGG at the Big Build 2024" are now open:
This year the NCAGG is participating in The Big Build event hosted by the National Building
Museum on October 19th to bring awareness to the public about the Guild and a brief history of
studio glass while sharing several examples of technique and uses of glass as art. Historically
most attendees are families with young children. Part of our educational display will include a
children’s activity table and a handout of glass industry resources for classes, supplies, services
and support.
Lend us your glass.
We are seeking volunteer participants. Lend us your glass for display at this event. We hope to share a variety of examples including blown, fused, slumped, mosaic, cast, torch, pate-de-verre, bead, stained glass, mosaic or dichroic. Except for a few pieces placed under plexi-boxes, we expect a lot of handling of the smaller pieces…so, make sure you are OK with that.
Tamah Graber has graciously agreed to review and collect our samples for display. To participate, first send her a photo of your piece with a description of the size and process to grabertamah@gmail.com She’ll let you know what works best for the display. Then, bring your items (well packaged) to the Annual Meeting on Sunday, September 29th.
Pass us your Puddles
One of our most popular giveaways is our members' ‘puddle’ glass creations. So start melting those leftover glass scraps to create fun puddle keepsakes for our young visitors. Keep the size between 1 and 3 inches. Drop off your package of puddles at the Annual Meeting as well.
To sign up, follow the instructions on the page. It only takes a few seconds
Donate
Is your schedule so full that you can’t join us in person but want to support this effort? Then consider pledging a few dollars to help us offset costs for the displays Send checks directly to

Conversations with Stephen Brucker, Glass Artist
Stephen Brucker operates his flameworking studio in Camillus, New York, and exhibits his work throughout the Northeast. He has been selected as an award recipient in both nationally and internationally juried exhibitions.
His borosilicate glass sculptures are centered on the combination of forms and structures found in nature and are aligned with themes signifying home, inclusion, and equity. Fragility, transparency, balance, and impermanence are core conceptual topics Stephen explores in each of his sculptures. He is most interested in representing these concepts in the most economical way possible while pushing the physical properties of the material.
Stephen received his MFA in Sculpture with a minor in Glass Sculpture and Art History from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2012 and his BFA in Sculpture with a minor in Art History from SUNY Oswego in 2005.
He will discuss how to develop multiple revenue streams for selling your glass work, among other topics.

Monthly Meeting - Imagine Museum Virtual Tour
The presentation for our April NCAGG meeting will be a guided virtual tour of the Imagine Museum.
“In 2018, founder, philanthropist, artist and business woman, Trish Duggan, determined to open a museum in St. Petersburg, FL as a way to give back to the community. Her goal was to put together a collection of artworks and promote an experience that would inspire, uplift and educate. As a woman already working with glass for her personal art, Ms. Duggan determined that the properties of glass and glass art would provide such an experience.
The President of Michigan-based Habatat Galleries, Corey Hampson, teamed up with Ms. Duggan to realize an ever-expanding vision of creating the most significant collection of contemporary glass art in the world. The beginning collection of 500 artworks represented the American Glass Family Tree relating to the Studio Glass Movement, beginning in the 1960s through to today. The collection has now expanded to over 1,500 spectacular contemporary glass art works representing artists from America, Canada, the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and Australia, to name a few. Ms. Duggan aspires to build a collection and a museum that inspires and uplifts all who experience it.”
