Laurie Madsen Snarr
Artist Statement:
Some of the feature pieces I use in my stained glass creations have come from broken vintage and antique items. They are created at first to serve one purpose: as a dish, or part of a chandelier. By accident, mishandling or normal use over time, they became broken, never to be or function in the same way they once did. We all have broken pieces. I am fascinated by the potential of broken things being made whole. Their brokenness frees them to become something new. Sharp, jagged, cloudy shards of glass, polished and made smooth by abrasion, restored to their full luster, redefined as something greater than they originally were.
My glass artwork represents a celebration of freedom, strength, and the resilience of the human spirit. It is a quest for light, providing space to breathe, converting pain to beauty, separation to wholeness. Heat, melting and fusion create change, new possibilities and growth. Each panel liberates a power of creation, opens windows of light, illuminates darkness with hope.
Tony Glander has served as my glass mentor and has been an invaluable resource for answering my questions along the way. My journey also has been enlightened by dear people in my life who continue to encourage me as an artist and believe in me as a person.
